- Niklaus Wirth abandoned Pascal many years ago (1981) when he developed the
- language Modula and Modula-2. A very real quote from him is: "Pascal was only
- meant to be a teaching language. Modula-2 is the real language." He's still
- saying this today (well he did when I spoke with him at ETH last summer). He
- has since abandoned Modula-2 to the standards committee(s). Not because it's
- not good or deficient, but he is a language designer and actions by standard
- committees means his work is done. He has since developed Oberon and others
- at ETH have added object-oriented concepts and language extensions. More work
- is underway in this area. Unfortunately for the public at large, you will not
- find much information on Oberon. There are no books, only a handfull of very
- terse reading ETH technical reports which are out of print. The published
- journal papers from 1988 no longer reflect the current state of the language.
-
- And don't send me e-mail asking for further info. I do not have the time to
- respond to such queries. Sorry. You'll have to wait until Prof. Wirth decides
- it's time to write "Programming in Oberon". If we're lucky, we might see such
- a thing in 1992 but no quarantees.
